Iraqi universities and academic institutions have achieved competitive results in the 2026 Scimago Institutions Rankings, which evaluated 10,827 institutions worldwide.
The results highlighted 83 Iraqi universities, including the University of Baghdad, the University of Technology, Mustansiriya University, the University of Babylon, the University of Diyala, Al-Mustaqbal University, the University of Information Technology and Communications, the University of Mosul, the University of Basra, and the University of Anbar.
The Scimago ranking is based on a composite index that integrates three distinct criteria:
- Scientific Research (50%)
- Innovation (30%)
- Societal Impact (20%)
Each primary indicator includes sub-indicators such as the number of published research papers, the quality of the journals in which they are published, citation counts, and relative impact factors. Additionally, institutions must meet a mandatory requirement of publishing at least 100 research papers in the Scopus database within the evaluation year.
